Artemisinin and its derivatives have been used for the treatment of malarial and parasitic worm (helminth) infections. Artemisinins are derived from extracts of sweet wormwood (Artemisia annua) and are well established for the treatment of malaria, including highly drug-resistant strains. Their efficacy also extends to phylogenetically unrelated parasitic infections such as schistosomiasis. Artemisinin, antimalarial drug derived from the sweet wormwood plant, Artemisia annua. Artemisinin is a sesquiterpene lactone (a compound made up of three isoprene units bound to cyclic organic esters) and is distilled from the dried leaves or flower clusters of A. annua. Artemisinin (ART), a sesquiterpene lactone compound identified by Chinese researcher Youyou Tu, represents a significant contribution from traditional Chinese medicine, extracted primarily from the plant species Artemisia annua of the Asteraceae family [1]. Abstract Artemisinin (ART) is a bioactive compound isolated from the plant Artemisia annua and has been traditionally used to treat conditions such as malaria, cancer, viral infections, bacterial infections, and some cardiovascular diseases, especially in Asia, North America, Europe and other parts of the world. Artemisinin is the most effective antimalarial drug derived from Artemisia annua that was discovered by a Chinese researcher You-You Tu and her team in 1972 1 and in 2015 shared the Nobel Prize for Medicine for her discovery. Artemisinin is administered as an Artemisinin-based Combination Therapy (ACT) to combat and prevent the development of drug resistance. Artemisinin acts very quickly but has a short half.
